USS SAN DIEGO LPD 22 |
The San Diego (LPD 22), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fourth ship of the U.S. Navy to be named for San Diego, California. The city is the home of Naval Base San Diego, the Navy's largest base in the Pacific. June 12, 2010 The Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) San Diego was christened during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. Linda Winter, wife of former Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter, served as sponsor of the ship. Cmdr. Jon E. Haydel is the prospective commanding officer. October 2, LPD 22 received 100,000 gallons of fuel for the first time, achieving a key milestone required for engine light off, planned to occur in November. October 1, 2011 PCU San Diego successfully completed builder’s trials in the Gulf of Mexico. The ship will spend several weeks at Ingalls undergoing further tweaks in preparation for Navy acceptance trials, expected to be run in November by the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). October 7, The San Diego was damaged late last month when an improperly-installed relief valve caused part of the ship's ballast system to overpressurize, damaging three ballast tanks. There were no indications, as of Oct. 6, of any damage to the ship's hull or side shell. Following repairs, the ballast and deballast system and their tanks will be retested during acceptance trials. LPD 22 completed acceptance trials Nov. 17. December 19, The U.S. Navy took delivery of PCU San Diego during a ceremony at Huntington Ingalls Industries - Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. March 12, 2012 Rear Adm. Gerard P. Hueber, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3, relieved Cmdr. Jon E. Haydel as CO while allegations of personal misconduct are investigated. Cmdr. Kevin P. Meyers assumed temporary command of the LPD 22. March 19, PCU San Diego arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for a routine port call. Transited Panama Canal on March 25. April 6, The Pre-Commissioning Unit San Diego arrived in its homeport of Naval Base San Diego, Calif., after a three-week transit from Pascagoula, Miss.
