The Comstock (LSD 45) is the 5th Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship and the second U.S. Navy ship to be named after the Comstock Lode, an early American pioneer mining site near Virginia City, Nevada. The Comstock Lode, founded in 1859, has become indelible in the history of our American West; it produced more than $500,000,000 in gold and silver.

The keel was laid down by the Avondale Industries in New Orleans, La., on October 27, 1986; The ship was christened and launched on January 16, 1988. Mrs. Jan Gray, the wife of General Alfered M. Gray, Jr., Commandant of the Marine Corps, served as sponsor of the ship. Cmdr. Robert H. Howe is the prospective commanding officer.

February 3, 1990 USS Comstock was commissioned during a ceremony at Riverwalk Marketplace wharf in downtown New Orleans.

February 5, The dock landing ship moved to Avondale Algiers shipyard.

March 30, The Comstock embarked three Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCAC's) off Panama City, Fla., for delivery to ACU-5 at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

April 6, LSD 45 moored at Naval Station Rodman in Balboa, Panama, for a brief stop to refuel after transiting Panama Canal; Brief stop in Acapulco, Mexico, to MEDEVAC sailor due to possible heart attack on April 10.

April 17, USS Comstock arrived in its homeport of Naval Station San Diego, Calif., after a 19-day transit from New Orleans, La.

From May 7-11, the Comstock was underway for routine training in the SOCAL Op. Area; Underway for local operations on June 4; Underway for Combat Systems Ship's Qualification Trials (CSSQT) from June 7-15; Underway for local operations from June 26-29 and July 19-20; Underway for Operational Propulsion Plant Examination (OPPE) from Aug. 7-8; Underway for final contract trials from Aug. 14-17; Underway for Shakedown Training from Aug. 27- Sept. 13; Underway for a Dependent's Day Cruise on Sept. 14.

September 15, USS Comstock commenced a two-month Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) at Soutwest Marine shipyard in San Diego.

November 26, The Comstock pulled into pulled into Naval Station Treasure Island in San Francisco, Calif., for a four-day training availability; Underway for Amphibious Refresher Training (PHIBREFTRA) from Nov. 30- Dec. 11.

From January 10-11, 1991, the dock landing ship was underway for routine training off the coast of southern California; Underway again from Jan. 14-18 and 23-25th; Underway for REFTRA from Feb. 4-8, 11-15 and 19-22nd.

February 26, USS Comstock departed San Diego to trasport four new LCAC's from Panama City, Florida; Brief stop at Naval Station Rodman on March 7; Transited Panama Canal on March 8.

March 10, LSD 45 anchored off George Town, Cayman Islands, for a three-day port visit; Inport Panama City from March 16-17; Returned home on April 1; Underway for routine training from April 9-11; Underway for OPPE from April 16-17.

From April 30 through May 12, the Comstock was underway in support of Operation Kernel Usher 91-1 in the SOCAL Op. Area.

May 29, USS Comstock departed Naval Station San Diego for its maiden deployment, as part of the USS Peleliu (LHA 5) ARG, in support of Operation Desert Storm.

June 13, The Comstock arrived off the coast of Iwo Jima to participate in annual commemoration of the famous Pacific WWII battle.

June 18, The dock landing ship pulled into Subic Bay, Philippines, for a brief stop in support of Operation Fiery Vigil after Mt. Pinatubo erupted on June 16; Anchored off Cebu City from June 19-20; Upkeep at Naval Station Subic Bay from June 22-24 and 25-26th.

June 30, USS Comstock arrived in Hong Kong for a five-day port visit; Anchored off Singapore to embark supply parts and cruise book photographers on July 9; Entered the Arabian Gulf on July 19; Anchored off Al Hamra, U.A.E., for PHIBLEX from July 20-31.

July 21, Lance Cpl. A. P. San Juan was killed in the welldeck when an unmanned 5-ton truck rolled down the ramp and struck him from behind.

From August 2-5, the Comstock was anchored off Bahrain; Inport Manama from Aug. 5-10; Anchored off Al Hamra for PHIBLEX from Aug. 13-19.

August 23, USS Comstock moored outboard the USS L. Y. Spear (AS 36) in Jebel Ali, U.A.E., for a 12-day tender availability; Anchored at Bahrain Bell-Sitrah Anchorage from Sept. 11-12.

From Sept. 13-22, LSD 45 was anchored in the Central Arabian Gulf for salvage and security duties after an MH-53 Sea Dragon, from HM-15 embarked aboard the Peleliu, crashed at sea on Sept. 12. All six crew members died.

September 24, USS Comstock pulled into Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for a five-day port visit; Participated in exercise Sea Soldier V, off the coast of Oman, from Oct. 2-9; Underway in the North Arabian Sea through Oct. 20.

October 27, The Comstock arrived at British Naval Base Sembawang in Singapore for a five-day port visit; Inport Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from Nov. ?-19.

November 27, USS Comstock returned to San Diego after a six-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility (AoR).

January 18, 1992 Cmdr. Ward L. Harris, Jr., relieved Cmdr. Robert H. Howe as CO of LSD 45.

From February 4-5, the Comstock was underway for routine training; Underway for amphibious operations from Feb. 10-11; Underway again on Feb. 18.

February 20, USS Comstock moored at Pier 1 in Naval Station Treasure Island, San Francisco, Calif., for a brief port call to embark fuel barge for transport to Key West, Florida; Underway for local operations from Feb. 21-28.

March 2, LSD 45 pulled into Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme, Calif., for a two-day port call to embark damaged LARC's for transport to Gulfport, Mississippi; Transited the Panama Canal on March 14.

March 17, USS Comstock anchored off Cancun, Mexico, for a five-day port visit; Anchored off Key West on March 23; Inport Gulfport, Miss., from March 25-26; Port visit to Panama City, Fla., from March 27-30 to embark four new LCAC's; Transited Panama Canal southbound on April 3.

April 8, The Comstock anchored off Acapulco, Mexico, for a three-day port visit; Ammo offload at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Calif., from April 16-17.

April 20, The dock landing ship returned to homeport after a seven-week underay period.

April 24, USS Comstock entered the Southwest Marine shipyard for a three-month Planned Maintenance Availability (PMA); Underway for sea trials from July 21-23; Ammo onload at Naval Air Station North Island on Aug. 12; Underway on Aug. 19.

August 21, The Comstock arrived in Naval Air Station Alameda, San Francisco, for a 10-day port call to pick up Army Corps of engineers; Offload off San Clemente Island on Sept. 2; Returned home on Sept. 3; Underway for routine training from Sept. 11-17; Underway for amphibious operations on Sept. 21; Inport NAS Alameda from Sept. 25-29; Returned home on Oct. 3; Underway for Tailored Ship's Training Availability (TSTA) I from Oct. 5-9; Underway for routine training from Oct. 13-16;

September 28, LSD 45 moored at Buoy #50 in Victoria Harbour for a five-day liberty port visit to Hong Kong.

October 7, Cmdr. Edward W. Herbert, III relieved Cmdr. Ward L. Harris, Jr., as CO of the Comstock during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship at sea.

October 18, USS Comstock arrived off the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia, in support of Operation Restore Hope.

December 6, The Comstock pulled into Victoria, Seychelles, for a four-day port visit; Anchored off Mogadishu from Dec. 12 through February 1, 1994.

February 7, The dock landing ship anchored off Phuket, Thailand, for a five-day liberty; Port call to Hong Kong from Feb. 18-22; Inport Sasebo, Japan, to swap out LCAC from Feb. 23-25.

March 7, The Comstock pulled into Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a two-day port call to embark friends and family members for a Tiger Cruise; Offloaded the 15th MEU at Camp Pendleton on March 17.

March 18, USS Comstock returned to San Diego after a six-and-a-half month deployment.

May 3, LSD 45 departed Naval Station San Diego for a Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) assessment.

July 17, The Comstock pulled into Hong Kong for a five-day port call.

July 26, LSD 45 anchored at Man-O'-War Anchorage in Singapore for a five-day port visit.

August 15, USS Comstock moored at Aqaba Naval Base to participate in a two-week exercise Infinite Moonlight with the Jordanian Armed Forces; Underway for at-sea phase from Aug. 20-24; Inport Aqaba again from Aug. 24-30.

September 8, The Comstock pulled into Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, for an 11-day upkeep.

October 4, The dock landing ship moored at Kuwait City for a six-day port call to backload Marines after participated in a two-week exercise Eager Mace 96-1; Port visit to Manama, Bahrain, from Oct. 20-24 after participating in exercise Neon Falcon.

October 27, USS Comstock pulled again into Jebel Ali for a nine-day port call for maintenance and to conduct agricultural counter-measure washdowns of all embarked equipment. Departed Arabian Gulf on Nov. 6; Departed North Arabian Sea on Nov. 10.

November 20, The Comstock arrived in Fremantle, Australia, for a six-day visit to Perth; Inport Naval Station Pearl Harbor from Dec. 14-15; Offload at Camp Pendleton on Dec. 21.

December 22, USS Comstock returned to Naval Station San Diego after a six-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet AoR.

February 5, 1996 USS Comstock entered the dry-dock at Southwest Marine shipyard for a four-month Drydocking Phased Maintenance Availability (DPMA); Returned to NAVSTA San Diego on March 21; Underway for sea trials from June 3-5; Underway for ammo onload at NAS North Island and local operations from June 25-28; Underway for TSTA I from July 22-26, July 29- Aug. 2 and Aug. 5-9; Underway for TSTA II from Sept. 16-20 and 23-27th; Underway for a Guest Cruise from Oct. 1-4; Underway in support of NORTHPAC exercise on Oct. 9.

June 27, USS Comstock arrived in Lumut, Malaysia, for the first phase of CARAT; Underway for at-sea phase from July 5-7; Inport Lumut again for closing ceremonies from July 7-10.

July 11, LSD 45 arrived in Singapore for the second phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training; Underway for at-sea phase on July 19; Departed Singapore on July 23.

July 26, The Comstock arrived in Royal Thai Navy installation in Sattahip to participate in CARAT Thailand; Underway for at-sea phase on Aug. 2; Departed Thailand on Aug. 6.

August 11, USS Comstock pulled into Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, Indonesia, for the last phase of CARAT exercise through Aug. 24.

August 26, The Comstock anchored 2 n.m. off the western coast of Bali, Indonesia, for a five-day of liberty; Offload in okinawa from Sept. 9-13; Inport Pearl Harbor from Sept. 24-29.

October 6, USS Comstock returned to homeport after four-and-a-half month underway period.

From November 3-6, the Comstock was underway for ammo offload at NWS Seal Beach; Commenced a Planned Maintenance Availability (PMA) on Nov. 17.

June 2, 2000 Cmdr. Sinclair M. Harris relieved Cmdr. Edward Barfield as CO of LSD 45.

March 2, 2001 USS Comstock arrived in San Francisco, Calif., for a three-day port visit to participate in Fleet Week.

From March 26 through April 6, the Comstock was underway in support of biannual amphibious exercise Kernel Blitz; Underway for COMPTUEX from May 1-11; Underway for FLEETEX from June 1-13; Underway for ARGEX/SOCEX from June 22- July 2; Underway for sea trials from Aug. 7-9.

August 13, USS Comstock departed homeport for a scheduled Middle East deployment as part of the USS Peleliu ARG; Inport Pearl Harbor from Aug. 20-21.

September 7, The dock landing ship pulled into Darwin, Australia, for a port visit and to offload the PBY Catalina; Underway on Sept. 12, earlier than scheduled, after terorists attack on U.S.

From Sept. 15-18, the Comstock was underway off East Timor in support of hummanitarian Operation Handsclap; Arrived on station in the North Arabian Sea on Sept. 28; Commenced support in Operation Enduring Freedom on Oct. 3.

In early October, the number of Marines were offloaded for insertion into Pakistan to secure the Pasni Airfield.

October 26, LSD 45 entered the Arabian Gulf to offload the majority of remaining Marines in Bahrain; Moored at Mina Salman Pier in Manama on Oct. 28; Departed Arabian Gulf on Nov. 3 to return to station in NAS.

From January 8-12, 2002, USS Comstock was anchored off Kuwait naval base to backload Marines.

January 28, USS Comstock pulled into Fremantle, Australia, for a four-day visit to Perth.

February 6, Cmdr. Jonathan M. Pathfield relieved Cmdr. Sinclair M. Harris as the 8th CO of Comstock.

February 7, The Comstock arrived in Sydney, Australia, for a six-day port visit; Inport Pearl Harbor from Feb. 23-24; Anchored off Camp Pendleton for offload on March 2.

March 4, USS Comstock returned to Naval Station San Diego after a nearly seven-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility.

April 8, LSD 45 moored at Bravo Pier on Naval Air Station North Island to offload 42 Rolling Airframe Missiles (RAM); Anchored at Coronado Roads on April 9 to transfer ammunition to USS Rushmore (LSD 47); Underway for deck landing qualifications with the HC-3 and HC-11 from April 10-11.

April 18, USS Comstock entered the Southwest Marine shipyard for a three-month Drydocking Planned Maintenance Availability (DPMA); In dry-dock from May 8- June 19; Underway for sea trials from July 15-19; Underway for Navy's Career Orientation Training for Midshipmen (CORTRAMID) cruise and sea trials from July 29- Aug. 2; Underway for CART II from Aug. 5-7; Underway for amphibious operations from Aug. 19-23; Underway for TSTA I from Sept. 16-20; Underway for TSTA II from Sept. 30- Oct. 4; Underway for amphibious operations on Oct. 7.

From October 21 through Nov. 1, LSD 45 was underway for Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), as part of the USS Tarawa (LHA 1) ARG; Underway for routine training from Nov. 4-8 and Nov. 18-22; Underway for ammo onload at Seal Beach from Dec. 10-12.

January 17, 2003 USS Comstock departed San Diego, as part of Amphibious Task Force West (ATF-W), for a surge deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Embarked 1st Bn and 3rd LAR Bn, 11th Marines Regt off Camp Pendleton.

February 11, The dock landing ship pulled into Apra Harbor, Guam, for a two-day port call; Entered the Arabian Gulf on Feb. 22; Anchored off Kuwait naval base on Feb. 25 to offload Marines in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Comstock than assumed role as the "mother ship" of the Maritime Environmental Response Operation (MERO), in the event of a deliberate oil spill in the North Arabian Gulf.

March 10, USS Comstock pulled into Ash Shuaybah, Kuwait, to embark Naval Supervisor of Salvage (NAVSUPSALV) and U.S. Coast Guard National Strike Force equipment and personnel in support of the MERO mission; Moored at Mina Salman Pier in Manama on March 30.

April 15, LSD 45 pulled again into Manama, Bahrain, for a two-day port call to offload MERO equipment and personnel; Backloaded Marines off Kuwait from April 23-24; Departed Arabian Gulf on April 25.

June 20, The Comstock arrived in Naval Station Pearl Harbor for a week-long port visit; Anchored off Camp Pendleton for offload and to embark "Tigers" on July 2.

July 3, USS Comstock returned to homeport after a nearly six-month combat deployment.

August 6, The dock landing ship moored at Bravo Pier, NAS North Island to offload RAM missiles; Underway for local operations from Aug. 13-14; Underway again on Sept. 2.

September 5, USS Comstock arrived in Victoria, B.C., Canada, for a four-day port visit; Returned home on Sept. 12; Ammo offload at NWS Seal Beach from Sept. 17-19; Commenced a six-week Planned Maintenance Availability (PMA) on Oct. 1.

October 23, Cmdr. John J. Braunschweig relieved Cmdr. Jonathan M. Padfield as CO of the Comstock during a change-of-command ceremony aboard the ship.

From November 20-24, the Comstock was underway for CART II off the coast of southern California.

May 27, 2004 USS Comstock departed San Diego for a surge deployment, with the USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) and the 11th MEU, in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

July 20, LSD 45 assumed duties as Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB) in the northern Arabian Gulf, to provide security for Al Basrah Oil Terminal (ABOT) and Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal (KAAOT).

October 24, USS Comstock returned to homeport after a five-month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism.

May 26, 2005 Cmdr. Paul J. Shock relieved Cmdr. John J. Braunschweig as the 10th commanding officer of LSD 45.

December 6, The Comstock is currently underway in the SOCAL Op. Area for routine training.

December 9, USS Comstock successfully loaded a 270 ft. section of the Navy Lighter System (NLS) into the ship’s well deck, making it the first ship on the west coast to do so. NLS was developed during World War II as a method of moving equipment from ship to shore but was never loaded onto a ship until recently in support of Hurricane Katrina. NLS is a floating dock system designed to reach locations where conventional port facilities may be damaged, inadequate or non-existent. September 30, USS Comstock returned to Naval Base San Diego after a seven-month deployment. The Scan Eagle Unmanned Aerial System, embarked aboard Comstock, flew more than 120 missions totaling 900 flight hours. The ship also made port visits to Salalah, Oman and Aqaba, Jordan.

November 3, Capt. John C. Ring relieved Cmdr. Lance L. Lesher as the 14th CO of the LSD 45 during a change-of-command ceremony aboard the ship at San Diego.

April 4, 2012 General Dynamics NASSCO has been awarded a $69 million modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-08-C-4410) for USS Comstock fiscal 2012 Extended Drydocking Phased Maintenance Availability (E-DPMA). Work is expected to be completed by May 2013 and includes an extensive renovation and modernization of an LSD class ship, including alterations and repairs as well as inspection and testing to all ships systems and components ensuring safe and dependable operation of the ship.

August 22, General Dynamics NASSCO has been awarded a $104 million contract modification for USS Comstock; Commenced availability on May 2.

In September, the Comstock departed dry-dock and moved to HII Continental Maritime of San Diego shipyard.
