The Dextrous (MCM 13) is the 13th Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship and the second United States ship to bear that name. Her kell was laid down on March 11, 1991, by Peterson Builders, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

June 20, 1992 The Pre Commissioning Unit (PCU) Dextrous was christened and launched during a ceremony at Peterson Builders shipyard. Mrs. Jacqueline E. Schafer, the Assistant SECNAV for Installations and Environment, served as sponsor of the ship. Lt. Cmdr. Robert I. McGrath, Jr., is the prospective commanding officer.

March 31, 1994 The Dextrous underway for the first time to conduct Bulider's (Alpha "A") trials. Inport Port Colborne, Canada, from April 29-30.

May 4, PCU Dextrous arrived in Quebec City, Canada, for a four-day port visit. Inport Halifax, Nova Scotia, from May 11-12; Inport Naval amphibious Base Little Creek, Va., from May 20-23.

June 2, MCM 13 in Naval Station Charleston, S.C., to offload magnetic material. Underway for degaussing runs at Charleston Magnetic Silencing Facility Cooper River range from. June 3-15; Departed Charleston after onload on June. 16; Port visit to Freeport, Bahamas, from June 17-20.

June 24, The Dextrous arrived in its homeport of Naval Station Ingleside, Texas, after a 59-day transit from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

July 9, USS Dextrous was commissioned during a ceremony in Ingleside, TX.

From July 14-17, the Dextrous was underway in the Galveston Bay Op. Area for SAR operations for a downed helicopter. Underway for OPPE from Sept. 20-22.

September 23, USS Dextrous departed Naval Station Ingleside for Combat Systems Ship's Qualification Trials (CSSQT) in Panama City, Fla.

November 3, The Dextrous moored at NAS Pensacola, Fla., for a four-day port visit. Returned to Panama City on Nov. 16; Returned home on Dec. 12.

January 11, 1996 Lt. Cmdr. Antony E. Mitschell relieved Lt. Cmdr. Robert I. McGrath, Jr., as CO of MCM 13.

February 22, 1997 Lt. Cmdr. Clifford S. Sharpe relieved Lt. Cmdr. Thomas M. Clemous, III as the 4th CO of Dextrous (Echo Crew).

August 6, Lt. Cmdr. Michael R. Arture relieved Lt. Cmdr. Clifford S. Sharpe as CO of the USS Dextrous (Delta Crew) during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship at Mina Salman Pier in Manama, Bahrain.

August 28, USS Dextrous departed Manama for mine hunting operations in Mine Danger Area (MDA) 6. Inport Kuwait City from Aug. 30- Sept. 1 and Sept. 8-10; Returned home on Sept. 12; Underway again on Sept. 14; Port visit to Doha, Qatar, from Sept. 15-17; Returned to Mina Salman on Sept. 18; Underway for MCM training in the CAG on Sept. 27; Brief stop at Manama to refuel on Sept. 29 and Muscat, Oman, on Oct. 2.

October 5, The Dextrous arrived in Karachi, Pakistan, for a three-day port call. Inport Dubai, U.A.E., from Oct. 11-13; Returned home on Oct. 15; Underway for MCM operations in the North Arabian Gulf (NAG) from Oct. 22-29; Brief stop to refuel in Kuwait City on Oct. 26.

October 31, MCM 13 pulled into Mina Rashid Port in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for a 24-day Restricted Availability (RAV). Returned to Manama, Bahrain, on Nov. 26.

From December 7-18, the Dextrous was underway in support of exercise Nautical Swimmer 98-1 with the Saudi Arabian Navy.

January 20, 1998 Lt. Cmdr. David D. Bruhn relieved Lt. Cmdr. Michael R. Arture as CO of the USS Dextrous (Foxtrot Crew).

From January 29-31, the mine countermeasures ship was underway for routine training. Underway for mine hunting operations in MDA 6 on Feb. 2.

February 7, The Dextrous was tasked to proceed to the NAG to assist USNS John McDonell (T-AGS 51) to locate the wrackege of two F/A-18Cs, from the USS George Washington (CVN 73), that crashed last night; Brief stop to refuel in Kuwait City on Feb. 9; Port visit to Doha, Qatar, from Feb. 19-21; Returned home for emergent repairs on Feb. 22; Underway again for mine hunting operations in MDA 6 on March 1; Inport Kuwait City for fuel and supplies from March 6-7; Port visit to Sharja, U.A.E., from March 13-14; Inport Dubai from March 14-18; Returned home on March 20; Underway in support of MCMEX '98 from March 21-25; Underway again on April 5.

April 8, USS Dextrous moored at Berth 8 in Mina Caboos for a five-day port visit to Muscat, Oman. Returned to Mina Salman Port on April 16; Underway again on April 28.

April 30, The Dextrous moored outboard the USS Simon Lake (AS 33) in Jebel Ali, U.A.E., for a week-long Fleet Maintenance Availability (FMAV).

May 9, MCM 13 arrived in Jubail, Saudia Arabia, for a brief port call before participating in exercise Nautical Swimmer 98-2. Anchored off King Abdul Aziz naval base for hot wash up on May 11; Returned home on May 13; Underway for "Hornet" salvage operations in the NAG from May 14-17.

July 1, Lt. Cmdr. John B. Bowie relieved Lt. Cmdr. David D. Bruhn as commanding officer of the Dextrous (Golf Crew).

From July 9-11, the mine countermeasures ship was underway for routine training in the CAG. Underway again from Aug. 24-25; Underway again on Aug. 26; Upkeep in Jebel Ali from Aug. 27-28; Returned to Manama on Sept. 1; Underway in support of MIREM 3 from Sept. 3-9; Underway to recover mines that had been layed in the exercise from Sept. 9-11; Underway for INSURV rehearsal from Sept. 17-18; Underway for a Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) assessment from Sept. 20-21; Underway for routine training from Sept. 25-27.

October 1, USS Dextrous departed homeport in support of exercise Red Reef '99. Inport Jubail from Oct. 3-5 and Oct. 13.

October 17, The Dextrous arrived in Wudam, Oman, for a two-day port call to participate in exercise Safe Handling 3-98; Inport Wudam again from Oct. 20-24; Underway in support of exercise Khunjar Hadd from Oct. 24-26; Anchored off Wudam from Oct. 26-27; Port visit to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., from Nov. 1-3; Returned home on Nov. 6; Underway for Q-route Surveys from Nov. 14-19 and 22-25th; Tender Availability from Nov. 26- Dec. 4; Underway for routine training from Dec. 5-9.

December 16, Lt. Cmdr. Brian J. Shanahan relieved Lt. Cmdr. John B. Bowie as CO of MCM 13 (Alpha Crew).

From Dec. 18-27, the Dextrous was underway in support of Operation Desert Fox in the NAG. Conducted operations inside Iraqi teritorial waters in Mine Danger Area (MDA) 10; Underway for MCM operations from Jan. 2-6, 1999.

February 2, USS Dextrous entered the dry-dock at Bahrain Ship Repair and Engineering Co. (BASREC) shipyard in Manama for a three-month Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA). Undocked on April 3; Returned to Mina Salman Pier on April 21; Underway for sea trials on May 19; Underway for MCM Rotational Crew turnover Preps. from May 30-31.

June 2, Lt. Cmdr. William C. Harris relieved Lt. Cmdr. Brian J. Shanahan as CO of the Dextrous (Delta Crew).

June 5, USS Dextrous departed Manama, Bahrain, in support of exercise Nautical Swimmer 99-1. Inport Jubail, Saudi Arabia, from June 6-7; Underway in the CAG from June 11-18; Returned home on June 20; Underway for MCM operations from June 26-29; Underway for routine training on July 8; Inport Kuwait City from July 14-17; Port calls to Jubail from July 19-22 and Doha from July 24-27; Returned to Manama on July 31.

From August 24-27, the mine coutermeasures ship was underway for bottom mapping in the Carrier Operating Area 1. Underway for special search operations from Sept. 11-15 and 20-28th; Underway in support of exercise Red Reef 10 on Oct. 1; Inport Jubail from Oct. 2-5 and 12-14th; Returned home on Oct. 16.

From Oct. 23 through Nov. 4, MCM 13 was underway for MCM operations. Port visit to Muscat, Oman, from Oct. 28- Nov. 1; Underway for exercise Nautical Sentry in Jubail from Nov. 5-10.

November 17, Lt. Cmdr. Donald D. Hodge relieved Lt. Cmdr. William C. Harris as the 11th CO of Dextrous (Foxtrot Crew).

November 29, USS Dextrous departed Manama for MIREM 11 and Fleet Battle Experiment Foxtrot. Brief stop at Mina Salman to refuel on Dec. 8 before conducting SAR operations for a downed S-3B Viking in the South Arabian Gulf (SAG); Conducted search for a sunken EXTORP in the CAG from Dec. 12-14; Returned home on Dec. 15.

January 5, 2000 The Dextrous departed homeport for MCM operations in the CAG. Port visit to Muscat, Oman, from Jan. 15-18; Inport Salalah, Oman, for refuel from Jan. 22-24; Returned to Manama, Bahrain, on Feb. 3; Underway for Q-Route surveys on Feb. 10; Port call to Abu Dhabi from Feb. 12-15; Inport Dubai for emergent repairs from Feb. 20-26; Inport Doha from Feb. 29- March 2; Returned home on March 3.

From March 16-21, MCM 13 was underway for routine training. Inport Kuwait City from March 18-19; Underway again from March 25-29; Underway in support of exercise Arabian Gauntlet from April 4-10.

May 1, Lt. Cmdr. Gary R. Parriott relieved Lt. Cmdr. Donald D. Hodge as commanding officer of the Dextrous (Golf Crew).

From May 3-6, USS Dextrous was underway for MCM operations in the CAG. Underway in support of emergent tasking for towing evolution from May 10-13; Underway for a port visit to Dubai from May 22-28; Underway in support of emergent tasking for MIO in the NAG from June 17-28; Underway in support of emergent tasking for HM-14 sonar recovery from Aug. 1-4; Underway en route to Abu Dhabi on Aug. 6 but returned late night for emergent repairs; Underway for routine triaing from Aug. 9-12; Underway again to search for a lost sonar from Sept. 10-13.

September 20, Lt. Cmdr. Michael A. Hegerty relieved Lt. Cmdr. Gary R. Parriott as CO of MCM 13 during a change-of-command ceremony at Mina Salman Pier.

September 24, USS Dextrous departed Manama for MCM operations. Conducted SAR in the NAG for a downed F/A-18C from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), from Sept. 30- Oct. 3; Returned home on Oct. 5; Emergency sortied on Oct. 12 and operated in the Central Arabian Gulf through Nov. 4; Conducted Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) in the NAG through Nov. 10; Returned home on Nov. 12; Underway in support of exercise Arabian Shark from Nov. 13-15; Underway for local operations from Dec. 10-11.

From June 28 through July 3, 2001, the Dextrous was underway for routine training after a five-month Selected Restricted Availability (SRA). Underway again from July 4-8; Anchored at Sitrah Anchorage for ammo onload on July 18; Underway for MCM operations from July 19-22 and Aug. 12-19; Underway for local operations on Aug. 30 and Sept. 9-11; Emergency sortied from Sept. 11-12; Underway for routine training from Oct. 1-3, 10-15, 18, 22-25, Oct. 30- Nov. 1, 26-27, Dec. 1-5 and 9-13th.

March 19, 2003 USS Dextrous, commanded by Lt. Cmdr. Michael C. Sparks, recently departed homeport in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

March 28, The mine countermeasures ship is currently conducting mine clearing operations in the Klawr Abd Allah (KAA) waterway off Umm Qasr, Irak.

November 7, USS Dexterous departed Manama to participate in Mine Warfare Readiness and Effectiveness Measuring (MIREM) Program 27 to collect and analyze mine warfare data. The data collected will be used to develop a database that can use to weigh decisions on proposed system improvements.

June 14, 2004 The Dextrous is currently underway in the Arabian Gulf for a Midshipmen Cruise.

July 22, 2005 Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey A. Bennett, II relieved Lt. Cmdr. Patrick T. Britt as the 17th CO of Dextrous.

May 23, 2008 Lt. Cmdr. Vince W. Baker relieved Lt. Cmdr. Joseph D. Femino as commanding officer of MCM 13.

September 4, 2009 USS Dextrous is currently participating in a mine countermeasure exercises, along with with the USS Bataan (LHD 5), USS Gladiator (MCM 11), USS Ardent (MCM 12), HMS Grimsby (M108) and RFA Lyme Bay (L 3007), in the Arabian Gulf.

September 29, USS Dextrous, commanded by Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer L. Forbus, moored at Iraqi Navy Pier in Umm Qasr for a routine port call.

From August 15-25, 2010, the Dextrous participated in a training evolution, in the Arabian Gulf, along with USS Scout (MCM 8), USS Gladiator, USS Ardent and four British mine countermeasures (MCM) ships.

August 29, 2012 The Dextrous is currently participating in a mine countermeasure exercise with the USS Sentry (MCM 3) and USS Ponce (AFSB(I) 15).

November 6, 2013 Capt. Richard D. Hayes, III, Commander, Task Force (CTF) 52, relieved of command Lt. Cmdr. Nathan S. Wemett, due to a "loss of confidence in his ability to command." The relief occurred after an investigation revealed deficiencies in operational preparedness, situational awareness, and tactical proficiency. Lt. Cmdr. Chavius Lewis assumed temporary command of the USS Dextrous (Olympian Crew).

October 31, 2014 USS Dextrous departed Mina Salman Port to participate in at-sea phase of International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX) 2014; Inport Muscat, Oman, from Nov. 5-8.

April 19, 2015 USS Dextrous recently arrived in Gulf of Aden to increase the naval presence in response to current instability in Yemen.

May 19, MCM 13 recently moored at Tanker Berth 10 in Port of Djibouti, Djibouti, for a routine port call. The ship is currently conducting Maritime Interception Operations (MIO) in the Gulf of Aden and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

June 3, The Dextrous recently returned to Manama after a two-month underway period.

September 24, Capt. Keith A. Knutsen, Commodore, Mine Countermeasures Squadron (MCMRON) 3 relieved of duty Lt. Cmdr. Linda H. McCauley, as CO of the USS Dextrous, due to a loss of confidence in her ability to command.

October ?, Lt. Cmdr. Michael J. Hellard assumed command of the USS Dextrous.

October 19, 2016 USS Dextrous, along with the USS Devastator (MCM 6) and USS Gladiator (MCM 11), participated in a photo exercise (PHOTOEX) with the RFA Lyme Bay (L 3007), HMS Middleton (M34), HMS Chiddingfold (M37), HMS Penzance (M106) and HMS Bangor (M109), at the start of a bilateral U.S./U.K. mine countermeasure exercise (MCMEX) 17-1.
