USS ALEXANDRIA SSN 757 |
USS Alexandria (SSN 757), a Los Angeles-class submarine, was the third ship of the U.S. Navy to be named for either Alexandria, Virginia, and Alexandria, Louisiana. The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut on November 26, 1984 and her keel was laid down on June 19, 1987. She was launched on June 23, 1990, sponsored by Mrs. Glenwood Clark, Jr., and commissioned on June 29, 1991, with Cmdr. Paul Normand in command. December ?, 2002 USS Alexandria returned to Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn., following a depot maintenance period (DMP) at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Kittery, Maine. Originally scheduled for a 13-month DMP, she received approximately $125 million of maintenance and modernization and returned to the fleet after less than 11 months. October 3, 2003 USS Alexandria, commanded by Cmdr. Thomas. J. Kearney, pulled to Goa, India, for a scheduled port visit before and after the second phase of Exercise Malabar '04 Oct. 3-9. Malabar, a bilateral exercise between the U.S. and Indian navies, was designed to increase interoperability between the two navies while enhancing the cooperative security relationship between India and the United States. December 10, USS Alexandria returned to homeport, following a deployment that circumnavigated the globe. She departed SUBASE June 11, then transited under the Arctic ice to the Pacific, Central and European Commands' area of responsibility. SSN 757 was the first improved Los Angeles-class attack submarine to conduct a circumnavigation of this nature. Additionally, it was the first U.S. nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine to visit Goa, India. She also visited Yokosuka, Japan; Guam; Singapore; Crete and Gibraltar. May 2, 2006 SSN 757 departed Naval Submarine Base New London for a six-month deployment, with the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, in support of the Global War on Terrorism. November ?, USS Alexandria returned to Groton, Conn., after a scheduled underway period in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations. March 18, 2007 USS Alexandria is currently participated in ICEX-07, 180 nautical miles off the north coast of Alaska. ICEX-07 is a U.S. Navy and Royal Navy exercise being conducted to demonstrate the nations’ commitment to assuring access to all international waters. February 22, 2008 Cmdr. Eugene J. Doyle relieved Cmdr. Michael Bernacchi as CO of the Alexandria during a change-of-command ceremony at the Shepard of the Sea Chapel in Groton, Conn. August 2, SSN 757 departed Souda Bay, Crete, after a three-day port visit. January 10, 2009 USS Alexandria returned to homeport after a six-month deployment in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. May 15, The fast-attack submarine is currently returning to Groton after participating in a tactical development exercise with the Canadian submarine HMCS Corner Brook. May 21, 2010 USS Alexandria departed Naval Submarine Base New London for a scheduled deployment. December 18, SSN 757 returned to Groton after a seven-month deployment in the U.S. 5th Fleet AoR. The Alexandria traveled around 30,000 n.m. and visited Kingdom of Bahrain and Cyprus. February 16, 2011 The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $19 million contract to plan and perform a Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) on the USS Alexandria. The work will take place at the shipyard in Groton and is scheduled for completion in July 2011. October 21, The Alexandria, commanded by Cmdr. Todd S. Weeks, arrived in Annapolis, Md., for a brief port visit to U.S. Naval Academy (USNA). |
