The Iowa (SSN 797) is the 24th Virginia-class attack submarine and the third United States Navy ship to be named for the state of Iowa.

August 20, 2019 The keel for the future USS Iowa was laid down during a ceremony at General Dynamics Electric Boat’s Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, R.I.

February 25, 2022 Cmdr. Matthew Powell relieved Capt. Quintin L. James as the 2nd CO of Iowa during a change-of-command ceremony on Naval Submarine Base New London.

June 17, 2023 The Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Iowa was christened during a 10 a.m. EDT ceremony at Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. Mrs. Christie Vilsack, the wife of Mr. Thomas J. Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture, served as sponsor of the ship.

August 14, PCU Iowa was launched and moored pierside at Electric Boat shipyard.

June 21, 2024 Cmdr. Gregory M. Coy relieved Cmdr. Matthew Powell as CO of the SSN 797 during a change-of-command ceremony at Fort Trumbull State Park in New London.

November 7, PCU Iowa moored at north wing wall of Graving Dock #2 on Electric Boat shipyard after a three-day underway for Builder's (Alpha) trials; Underway again on Nov. 8; Moored at south wing wall of Graving Dock #1 on Nov. 16; Underway for acceptance trials from Dec. 6-8; Moved to Pier 6N in Naval Submarine Base New London on Dec. 19.

December 22, General Dynamic's Electric Boat officialy delivered the PCU Iowa to U.S. Navy.

January 10, 2025 PCU Iowa departed Naval Submarine Base New London for routine operations; Brief stop off Groton for personnel transfer on Jan. 13; Moored at Trident Wharf in Port Canaveral, Fla., for a brief stop on Jan. 28; Moored at Trident Wharf again from Jan. 30- Feb. 10.

February 21, PCU Iowa moored at TRF's Magnetic Silencing Facility on Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga., for a three-day magnetic treatment (DEPERM); Conducted degaussing runs in Mayport Basin Channel on Feb. 25; Conducted acoustic trials off Port Everglades, Fla., from Feb. 27- March 2 and March 4-7; Moored at Trident Wharf in Port Canaveral from March 8-14.

March 27, PCU Iowa moored at Pier 6N on Naval Submarine Base New London.

April 5, USS Iowa was commissioned during a 10 a.m. EDT ceremony on Naval Submarine Base New London.

May 3, USS Iowa made a brief stop in Port Everglades, Fla., for personnel transfer; Moored at Trident Wharf in Port Canaveral for a brief stop on May 4; Conducted acoustic trials off Port Everglades on May 5.

May 9, The Iowa moored at Pier 6S on Naval Submarine Base New London; Underway again on May 21; Brief stop off Groton for personnel transfer on May 27 and 30th; Moored at Pier 6N on June 2.

June 6, Capt. Thomas P. Flaherty, III relieved Capt. Jason D. Grizzle as Commander, Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 4 during a change-of-command ceremony on board the Iowa.

June 7, USS Iowa departed Naval Submarine Base New London for routine operations; Brief stop off Groton for personnel transfer on June 12, 15, 26 and 29th; Moored at Pier 32N on July 3; Underway again from July 14-18.

August 1, USS Iowa moored at Pier 32S on Naval Submarine Base New London after a four-day underway in the Narragansett Bay Op. Area; Underway again on Sept. 15; Brief stop off Groton for personnel transfer on Sept. 18.

October 3, The Iowa recently arrived off coast of Virginia in support of the "Titans of the Sea" Presidential Review; Moored at Pier 31S on Oct. 7.
